Kevin W. Smith named new Los Alamos Site Office manager
Will succeed Don Winchell

July 1, 2010—Kevin W. Smith is the new manager of the National Nuclear Security Administration's Los Alamos Site Office.
“It is a pleasure to welcome and congratulate Kevin as he begins his tenure as the new manager of the Los Alamos Site Office,” said Brig. Gen. Garrett Harencak, NNSA's principal assistant deputy administrator for Military Application. “Kevin brings a tremendous wealth of knowledge to the NNSA Los Alamos Site Office, and we look forward to working with him as Los Alamos National Laboratory continues to develop and apply the best science and technology to meet NNSA’s core missions and national security needs.”
Smith comes to Los Alamos from the Kansas City Site Office, where he has been acting site office manager. He succeeds Don Winchell at LASO.
Smith's past DOE assignments include being deputy manager for the Y-12 Site Office and assistant manager for the Nuclear Materials Stabilization Project at Savannah River. While in the Air Force, he served in a number of senior capacities including being an F-16 squadron commander, F-117 Stealth Fighter Group commander, Deputy J3 for U.S. forces Korea, and chief of safety for Air Combat Command. In addition, Smith has received a number of awards, including the DOE Exceptional Service Award, the Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Bronze Star Medal.
Smith has a bachelor’s degree in physics from the Air Force Academy, as well as a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a master’s degree in management from Troy State University. Smith and his wife, Dorothy, are both originally from the state of Washington.
The NNSA Los Alamos Site Office is responsible for administering the management and operations contract for LANL as well as managing federal activities at the Laboratory.
