Laboratory assisting the nation
June 4, 2010—The Laboratory has a long history of serving the nation, from its Manhattan Project beginning in the 1940s to responding to national needs today. In the June issue of the Connections online newsletter, read about how Lab expertise is coming to bear in responding to emergencies across the nation, including in the Gulf.
This issue also highlights some of the Lab's education and community outreach efforts, including some scholarships recently awarded to Northern New Mexico students by SOC Los Alamos, the Lab's protective force subcontractor.
Community Programs Office Director Kurt Steinhaus notes that the Laboratory's multidisciplinary excellence stands ready to assist the nation, such as with the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. "LANL, along with partner Department of Energy labs, has been called upon to help with the situation and has two teams, one in Houston and one in Los Alamos, that are supporting the efforts to provide scientific and technological analysis. These efforts are currently geared toward engineering support, but that role could change depending on what work is needed in the future," said Steinhaus.
The June issue also has news about some awards the Lab recently received from the New Mexico Technology Council and the Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer.
Published monthly by the Community Programs Office, Connections is distributed to interested parties across the state.
Connections also links to a calendar of upcoming community events. Send feedback or story ideas for future issues of Connections to Linda Anderman or connections@lanl.gov, or call (505) 665-4400.
