Higdon named American Statistical Association Fellow
David Higdon
May 24, 2011—David Higdon of the Laboratory's Statistical Sciences is a new American Statistical Association (ASA) Fellow. The designation of Fellow has been a superlative honor in ASA for more than 90 years. Fellows have made outstanding contributions in some aspect of statistical work.
The number of Fellows selected each year is limited to no more than one-third of 1 percent of the ASA membership. The title of Fellow will be officially awarded to Higdon at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Miami, Florida in August.
Research and recognitions
Higdon is being honored for his foundational research in the areas of spatial modeling, Markov Chain Monte Carlo methodology, and evaluation of computer models; for important statistical contributions to national security and interdisciplinary problems of national importance; and for excellence in leadership of LANL's Statistical Sciences Group.
Higdon received a doctorate in statistics from the University of Washington. He was an assistant professor at Duke University and served as director of the Center for Multiscale Modeling and Distributed Computing and research associate at the National Institute of Statistical Sciences. He joined the Laboratory in 2001. During his career, Higdon has received numerous awards for his papers and for his service to the statistics profession and LANL. He has also had a paper read and discussed before the British Royal Statistical Society. Higdon's work supports the Laboratory's Information Science and Technology capability.
