April 28, 2011—Former Lab Director Sigfried Hecker was interviewed on camera in his LANL office last week for a television documentary about former U.S. Senator Pete Domenici scheduled to air this fall in New Mexico, stations and times to be announced.
Producer-director Chris Schueler spent an hour with Hecker, who shared recollections and insights about working with Domenici during the time Hecker led the Laboratory. Topics included Domenici’s role in advancing stockpile stewardship, nonproliferation, counter-terrorism, energy R&D, and health science.
During the interview, Hecker recounted Domenici’s abilities as a leading legislator, a consensus-builder, and a visionary. The former director praised Domenici’s understanding and appreciation of science and technology, his command of budget numbers, and his laser-sharp focus on strategic programs and relationships.
Hecker noted that although Domenici is well-known for advancing the interests of the state he represented as senator, "He was a statesman first."
