November 24, 2010—Lab employees again demonstrated their generosity by donating 560 turkeys and enough nonperishable food items to fill 688 food baskets during the Feed the 500 initiative, which ended Tuesday.
In addition, employees donated enough nonperishable food items to fill 15 pallets in the SM 30 Receiving and Distribution Center at Technical Area 3. These items were taken last night to Taos Feeds Taos, one of the agencies partnering with the Lab, said Tim Martinez of the Laboratory's Community Programs Office.
"I never cease to be amazed at the generosity of Lab employees," said Martinez. "Because of their generosity, more than 500 Northern New Mexico families will be able to enjoy a hearty Thanksgiving meal on Thursday."
Other agencies receiving frozen turkeys and food baskets include
- San Martin de Porres Soup Kitchen
- Taos Feeds Taos
- Española Valley Toy Run Inc.
- St. Vincent de Paul
- Wings of Hope
- St. Elizabeth Shelter
- Adelante Program for homeless students.
Phase two
Feed the 500 was phase one of the Lab's holiday drive, which continues through December 16. In phase two of the campaign, employees can take a holiday tag from locations around the Lab, including the Otowi Building and the Community Programs Office downtown and purchase gifts for children or seniors. Gifts should be unwrapped and the holiday tag should be included with the gift.
