Farmington Fire Department wins 2011 HAZMAT Challenge
Members of the Farmington Fire Department team partcipate in the rail car scenario, one of eight scenarios. A hazmat team is called to the scene of a rail car that has been severely damaged by a large forklift. Teams have to respond to the scene, perform an assessment, and mitigate any and all leaks.
The 2011 HAZMAT Challenge concluded last week with the Farmington Fire Department coming in first overall and first in technical events. The Farmington Fire Department also did well in last year's competition, finishing third overall.
Twelve hazardous materials response teams from Missouri, New Mexico, and Oklahoma tested their skills at the 15th annual HAZMAT Challenge, which was held August 2-5. The challenge provided hazardous materials responders the opportunity to network and learn new techniques under realistic conditions in a safe environment. Held at Technical Area 49, the event challenged participants to respond to simulated hazardous materials emergencies.
Invaluable training
The Laboratory began the challenge in 1996 as a way to hone the skills of its own HAZMAT team members. The competition offers an invaluable training opportunity for other New Mexico and regional hazardous materials response teams. The winning team takes possession of a travelling trophy, and the top three teams receive permanent trophies.
