Carlos Tomé honored at TMS symposium

Carlos Tomé

Carlos Tomé

March 1, 2011—Carlos Tomé of the Laboratory's Structure/Property Relations group is being recognized for his contributions to the field of Mechanical Behavior of Polycrystalline Materials during a symposium at the 2011 TMS (The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society) Annual Meeting (February 27 to March 3) in San Diego, California.

The symposium, "Polycrystal Modelling with Experimental Integration: A Symposium Honoring Carlos Tomé," features current theoretical, computational, and experimental work related to microstructure-property relationships in polycrystalline materials deforming in different regimes. Organized by Ricardo Lebensohn of the Lab's Structure/Property Relations group, Sean Agnew of University of Virginia, and Mark Daymond of Queen's University in Canada, the symposium features more than 90 presentations, including the keynote address by Tomé and 35 invited lectures.

Tomé has pioneered the theoretical and numerical development of models of polycrystal mechanical behavior, with emphasis on the role of texture and microstructure on the directionally dependent behavior of engineering materials. His work has established a strong connection between models and experiments, He is the co-author of two books, Texture and Anisotropy and Fundamentals and Engineering of Severe Plastic Deformation. He also has published 110 peer-review articles and contributed four times to the materials science sections of the yearly American Society of Metals Handbook.

Tomé was profiled in the October 2010 issue of The Journal of Metals.
