LOS ALAMOS, N.M., July 9, 1999 -- The Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory is hosting a public meeting on Wednesday, July 14 in Fuller Lodge to provide citizens with an update on cancer trends in Los Alamos County.

"Cancer Trends in Los Alamos County: 1973-1997" is the 10th in a series of community environmental meetings the Laboratory has hosted in surrounding communities, said Harry Otway of the Director's Office. It is free and open to the public.

Fuller Lodge is on Central Avenue in downtown Los Alamos. Public parking is available. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Pajarito Room of Fuller Lodge.

The featured speaker is Dr. William Athas of the New Mexico Tumor Registry at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Athas will talk about results of a joint study of cancer trends in Los Alamos County conducted by the Tumor Registry, which is part of the Cancer Research and Treatment Center at UNM's Health Sciences Center, and the Office of Epidemiology of the Public Health Division of the state Health Department.

"This meeting gives residents of Los Alamos County the opportunity to learn first hand the results of this study and ask questions of the study authors. This should be of particular interest to Los Alamos in view of past concerns about elevated brain and thyroid cancer rates," said Otway. "We encourage the public to attend."

The meeting will be televised on PAC-8, Los Alamos' community public access television station.
