LOS ALAMOS, N.M., July 8, 2004 -- Los Alamos National Laboratory Director G. Peter Nanos commended the education initiative announced today by Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham that calls for the Department of Energy and its national laboratories to promote science education and prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers.

"I welcome Secretary Abraham's call to enhance science education," Nanos said. "It fits well with the ongoing commitment that Los Alamos National Laboratory has made to strengthening math and science education in northern New Mexico schools.

"Science on Wheels, the Math and Science Academy, Go Figure!, the annual Robotics Competition and the Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Program are only a few of the many programs through which the employees of this laboratory have committed their time, knowledge and resources to enhancing math and science education throughout the region," Nanos said.

"The tremendous results from the laboratory's Math and Science Academy were highlighted in a news release issued earlier today," Nanos continued. "That program's goal -- to increase student achievement by improving teacher practice -- is being realized not only in math and science classrooms, but also in students' overall achievement.

"My own educational journey, which led to a doctorate in physics, began because of the inspiration I received from a high school teacher," Nanos reflected. "I can think of no greater reward for our staff than providing the means for similar inspiration to students in surrounding communities."

"We pledge our continued commitment to the students of northern New Mexico," Nanos concluded, "and we look forward to working with DOE to prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers."

Los Alamos National Laboratory is operated by the University of California for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) of the U.S. Department of Energy and works in partnership with NNSA's Sandia and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories to support NNSA in its mission.

Los Alamos enhances global security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear deterrent, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to defense, energy, environment, infrastructure, health and national security concerns.
