LOS ALAMOS, N.M., May 20, 2004 -- Groundbreaking ceremonies for a new Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) Gateway to Los Alamos building will take place at 3 p.m., on Monday, May 24 at Los Alamos National Laboratory's Technical Area 3. Laboratory and Department of Energy officials, along with congressional representatives, are scheduled to attend.

CINT is a Department of Energy/Office of Science Nanoscale Science Research Center (NSRC) operating as a national user facility devoted to establishing the scientific principles that govern the design, performance, and integration of nanoscale materials.

The CINT Gateway to Los Alamos Facility will be a 36,500 square-foot laboratory office building with approximately 11,000 square feet of laboratory space dedicated to nanobioscience and nanomaterials science.

The office, meeting, and scientific interaction spaces will support the CINT and laboratory staff, external CINT users and visitors. Principal occupants of the building will be staff from Bioscience, Chemistry, Materials Science and Technology and Theoretical divisions. This combination of nanoscale materials science and bioscience capabilities under one roof will create a unique science community dedicated to nanoscience and complement capabilities at the CINT Core Facility located in Albuquerque.

The Los Alamos CINT facility is a design-build project awarded to Hensel Phelps Construction with HDR Architecture as the principal architects. The $18.2 million construction project includes laboratory experimental equipment and is part of a larger $73.8 million CINT construction program, with the remaining funds allocated to building the CINT Core Facility in Albuquerque. Construction on the Los Alamos CINT facility is expected to be complete in September 2005.

CINT is one of five Department of Energy/Office of Science NSRCs throughout the United States that form an integrated national program, affiliated with major facilities at the DOE's national laboratories, to explore diverse aspects of nanoscience and technology.

The Los Alamos ceremony will be followed on Tuesday by a groundbreaking for the CINT Gateway to Sandia building in Albuquerque. Media interested in attending the Los Alamos event must contact the Los Alamos National Laboratory Public Affairs Office prior to the event to arrange an escort.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is operated by the University of California for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) of the U.S. Department of Energy and works in partnership with NNSA's Sandia and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories to support NNSA in its mission.

Los Alamos enhances global security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear deterrent, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to defense, energy, environment, infrastructure, health and national security concerns
