LOS ALAMOS, N.M., March 18,2004 -- Laboratory Director G. Peter Nanos will deliver the annual "State of the Laboratory" address to employees at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 22 in the Administration Building auditorium. The theme of this year's talk will be "Building Teamwork, Gaining Momentum."

Interested members of the news media are invited to attend the talk and participate in a media availability with Nanos immediately following the presentation. To make arrangements for attending, members of the media should contact the Laboratory Public Affairs Office at 667-7000.

During the multi-media presentation Nanos will talk about the Laboratory's top five performance priorities including safety, security and compliance, the national security mission -- both nuclear weapons and threat reduction -- the Laboratory's outstanding science in support of the mission, and the improvements in business practices and community partnerships.

Nanos will also introduce the Laboratory's new "Unique Value Proposition" or slogan, and will unveil a new re-vamped Laboratory logo that keeps most of the current design but focuses on the new UVP.

"This has been a very eventful year and the 'State of the Lab' will reflect on where we've been, but more importantly it will focus on where we are going," said Nanos. "Through teamwork and a positive attitude, we have accomplished an amazing array of activities, both in business practices improvement and in our world-class science--we're truly are building momentum and looking toward a very promising future."

Nanos will elaborate on the Laboratory's strategic path forward, the absolute need to ensure safety and security, to focus on critical process improvement, to re-baseline and balance the weapons program, to better integrate science, lower operating costs, leverage new partnerships, finish business process improvement, and to complete the workforce and salary reviews.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is operated by the University of California for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) of the U.S. Department of Energy and works in partnership with NNSA's Sandia and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories to support NNSA in its mission.

Los Alamos develops and applies science and technology to ensure the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear deterrent; reduce the threat of weapons of mass destruction, proliferation and terrorism; and solve national problems in defense, energy, environment and infrastructure.
