LOS ALAMOS, N.M., Feb. 27, 2004 -- A graphics designer who created poster panels for a Bradbury Science Museum exhibit captured Best of Show in art while his Los Alamos colleagues went home with 39 other awards at a recent competition of technical communicators from four states.

Jay Tracy of the Laboratory's Communication Arts and Services Group and other Los Alamos winners of the 2003 Southwest Regional Publications, Art, and Online Competitions received their awards at a recent banquet in Albuquerque that brought together members of the Society for Technical Communication from California, Arizona, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

Ten entries in art categories and one publications entry won Distinguished Technical Communication awards, the most ever for IM-1 staff in STC competitions.

The Society's awards, in descending order, are Award of Distinguished Technical Communication, Award of Excellence and Award of Merit. All Los Alamos winners of the Distinguished Technical Communication awards go on to the Society's international competitions next month, with winners to be announced in May.

Jay Tracy's introductory panels for the current Bradbury exhibit on Los Alamos' stockpile stewardship mission were honored by the judges as Best of Show in the Technical Art Competition.

Tracy said his challenges in designing the four panels were immense.

"Not only did the panels have to capture the stockpile stewardship mission in a global context, so that the balance of the exhibit could show the programmatic content, but the characterization had to visually reach the general public, interested visitors, scientists, Lab management and VIPs," Tracy said.

"In addition, it was important the panels respond to the museum's architecture and color palette. I used rounded forms and cool colors to soften the geometry of the exhibit spaces," Tracy said.

The following lists details of all the winning Los Alamos entries by category, award level, title and individual developers:
