LOS ALAMOS, N.M., June 2, 2003 -- Los Alamos National Laboratory today announced the choice of two new senior managers in the Threat Reduction Directorate office (TR). Don Cobb, Associate Director for Threat Reduction, has made the selection of his TR principal deputy and TR deputy for defense science and technology, respectively.

The new TR principal deputy associate director is Joseph "Cliff" Giles. Cobb said, "Cliff has worked in nonproliferation and related programs at the Laboratory for 13 years, most recently as principal deputy division leader in the Nonproliferation and International Security division. Cliff's experience and knowledge make him exceptionally well qualified for his new assignment." Giles takes his new title immediately, and his initial assignment is to serve as acting division leader for the Nonproliferation and International Security division.

The second announcement is the selection of Paul G. Weber as deputy associate director for defense science and technology. Weber will transition from his current post as division leader for Earth and Environmental Sciences in early June.

"Paul is an excellent choice to help develop and expand the Laboratory's technical support to the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, related government agencies and the military. He has an exceptional scientific and technical background to take on this challenging assignment. The Department of Defense is moving to transform the nation's defense capability to meet new threats to our national security. Scientific and technical innovation will be a hallmark of this transformation. As a leader in one of the premier national security science and technology laboratories, Paul will lead and help guide the Laboratory's efforts in supporting the transformation of our nation's defenses," Cobb said.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is operated by the University of California for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) of the U.S. Department of Energy and works in partnership with NNSA's Sandia and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories to support NNSA in its mission.

Los Alamos enhances global security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health and national security concerns.
