LOS ALAMOS, N.M., Jan. 7, 2003 -- Los Alamos National Laboratory Associate Director for Operations James Holt today announced that Stan Busboom, Security division leader, and Gene Tucker, Security division deputy leader, will step down from their management positions effective Jan. 8, 2003.

“There has been significant controversy over management and communication during recent events at the Laboratory that has led to substantial criticism and concern by our oversight organizations,” Holt said. “In order to address these concerns, new leadership in the division is necessary; therefore, I have reassigned Stan and Gene to non-management positions.”

Holt said that Scott Gibbs, his deputy in the Operations Directorate, would serve as interim division leader, and Kevin Leifheit, security program manager, as acting deputy division leader. The Laboratory is beginning an internal and external search to fill both positions.

“Significant improvements were made in many aspects of the Laboratory’s security programs during Stan’s and Gene’s tenure,” Holt continued, “and they leave an organization better prepared to face the future than when they arrived.”

Los Alamos National Laboratory is operated by the University of California for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) of the U.S. Department of Energy and works in partnership with NNSA's Sandia and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories to support NNSA in its mission.

Los Alamos enhances global security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health and national security concerns.
