LOS ALAMOS, N.M., Dec. 11, 2002 -- In association with a land-transfer agreement between the U.S. Department of Energy and Los Alamos County, crews with Maloy Construction Inc. are relocating electric utility lines on a tract of land in White Rock near N.M. 4 that now belongs to Los Alamos County.

The crews are moving two existing overhead power lines —a 13.2-kilovolt line and a 115-kilovolt line — on the tract. The lower-voltage line will be buried within a 50-foot right-of-way at the southern boundary of the tract near N.M. 4. The other line will be overhead within a 100-foot right-of-way at the northern boundary of the parcel, adjacent to San Ildefonso land.

The portion of the White Rock Tract transferred to Los Alamos County totals approximately 76 acres and is located across N.M. 4 from the Metzger’s gas station and hardware store.

Residents in the area should be aware that heavy equipment may at times be entering or leaving the parcel, possibly creating short traffic delays on N.M. 4. Work is scheduled to continue for seven months.

DOE is transferring 10 tracts of land to Los Alamos County and San Ildefonso Pueblo under Public Law 105-119. Under that law, DOE had to identify parcels of land that were no longer considered necessary to the Laboratory’s mission. The department identified the 10 parcels, amounting to about 4,000 acres, for transfer. The transferred land is intended for use in community self-sufficiency; economic diversification; or historical, cultural or environmental preservation purposes.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is operated by the University of California for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) of the U.S. Department of Energy and works in partnership with NNSA's Sandia and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories to support NNSA in its mission.

Los Alamos enhances global security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health and national security concerns.
