LOS ALAMOS, N.M., Oct. 21, 2002 -- The Bradbury Science Museum at the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory is hosting the ninth annual High Tech Halloween extravaganza Friday (Oct. 25). The free event is from 4 to 7 p.m. at the museum, located at 15th Street and Central Avenue in downtown Los Alamos.

"Expect the Unexpected," will captivate kindergarten and elementary school-age children with activities and displays ranging from wizard-scientists to live bats, amazing optical illusions and mysterious tunnels.

Each October, the Museum's High-Tech Halloween combines the wonder of science and technology with the chills and thrills of Halloween. The program varies every year and this special evening of science and fun has become a standard "must do" for children from Los Alamos, Pojoaque, Santa Fe, Española and other communities, said Pat Berger, museum event coordinator.

This year's theme, "Expect the Unexpected," focuses on the intersection of science and magic. Demonstrators will use optical illusions and magic tricks to show how people's senses can fool them. The museum will provide educational materials to continue the science as a learning project at home.

Children of all ages can attend High-Tech Halloween. Registration is not needed, but the museum asks parents or responsible adults to accompany their children. Costumes are encouraged for children and adults, but not required.

The museum participates with many downtown merchants who take part in Los Alamos' Main Street Halloween activities.

For more information about High Tech Halloween, contact Berger at 665-0896.

To be added to the museum's mailing list write to pberger@lanl.gov by electronic mail and place "Events" in the subject line.

The museum is part of Los Alamos' Community Relations Office.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is operated by the University of California for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) of the U.S. Department of Energy and works in partnership with NNSA's Sandia and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories to support NNSA in its mission.

Los Alamos enhances global security by ensuring safety and confidence in the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction and improving the environmental and nuclear materials legacy of the cold war. Los Alamos' capabilities assist the nation in addressing energy, environment, infrastructure and biological security problems.
