LOS ALAMOS, N.M., April 29, 2002 --The National Nuclear Security Administration's Los Alamos National Laboratory is recompeting the facilities maintenance and site support services contract, currently valued at about $150 million annually.

The contract has been held since October 1997 by Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico.

The decision to seek competitive bids on the support services contract is part of Laboratory Director John Browne's realignment of Laboratory operations and a move toward a different approach to facility operations and maintenance.

Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico employs about 1,500 personnel. The Laboratory doesn't anticipate any significant reduction in the need for services these personnel provide.

A request for proposals on the support services contract was issued on April 23, 2002. The deadline to submit proposals to Los Alamos is June 11, 2002.

Key components of the contract include small business utilization, economic development and stability of the existing work force.

Demonstrating a commitment to partnering or subcontracting with small businesses will be part of the source selection process. The Laboratory reserves the right to redefine the scope of work if the contract company doesn't adequately utilize small businesses.

The successful company will be encouraged to support existing economic development efforts underway in Northern New Mexico and propose new economic development initiatives.

The company that is awarded the site support services contract will be required to recognize existing bargaining representatives and comply with existing collective bargaining agreements as permitted by law.

Los Alamos has created a World Wide Web page containing the Request for Proposals, including a Statement of Objectives and other detailed information about the support services contract.

The Request for Proposals seeks interested parties who are committed to proactively partnering with the Laboratory to ensure the application of best business practices and state-of-the-art approaches to facilities management and maintenance.

The Web page can be found at http://bus.lanl.gov/bus5/vendor/solicitations/FMSS/default.htm online.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is operated by the University of California for the National Nuclear Security Administration of the U.S. Department of Energy and works in partnership with NNSA's Sandia and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories to support NNSA in its mission.

Los Alamos enhances global security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile, developing technical solutions to reduce the threat of weapons of mass destruction and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health and national security concerns.
