New senior managers announcedContact: Nancy Ambrosiano, nwa@lanl.gov, (505) 665-4610 LOS ALAMOS, N.M., Sept. 18, 2001 -- John Browne, director of the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory, today announced the new composition of his senior executive team, the next step in an effort he initiated earlier this summer to re-align the Laboratory's nuclear weapons program. These senior managers are responsible for providing leadership and integrated management to the new approach in accomplishing Los Alamos' mission. "I have made it clear to the Laboratory that teamwork, commitment and accountability are paramount to our success in the re-aligned organization. These managers were chosen because I believe that they exhibit the leadership skills and characteristics that are needed to engage the divisions, groups, technical and support staff in a unified approach to fulfilling our responsibilities," Browne said. "There are great challenges facing the Laboratory and the nation today. We must step up to meeting those challenges at all levels. This new management team is charged with the implementation of the new approach of managing our stockpile stewardship program directly in the technical divisions with the strong assistance of our support organizations. I have great confidence both in this team and our workforce to carry this out," Browne said. The senior executive team is composed of the following people: - Joe Salgado, Principal Deputy Director - John Immele, Deputy Director for National Security - Bill Press, Deputy Director for Science and Technology - Don Cobb, Associate Director for Threat Reduction - Jim Holt, Associate Director for Operations - Ray Juzaitis, Associate Director for Weapons Physics - Rich Mah, Associate Director for Weapons Engineering and Manufacturing - Thomas Meyer, Associate Director for Strategic Research - Vacant, Associate Director for Administration (J. Salgado, acting) - Jo Ann Milam, Executive Staff Director "This team is our 'corporate board,' responsible for executing our vision and carrying out the mission," Browne said. "These team members will be held accountable for an institutional approach going beyond parochial interests, beyond specific divisions and programs. In partnership, they will lead the institution by setting strategies, by engaging the divisions in planning, by establishing clear priorities, by allocating and aligning resources, and by measuring our performance against established goals and objectives." The team will integrate science, technology, programs and business operations and improve customer and stakeholder relationships - goals for improved performance that Browne defined early in his directorship. They are also responsible for incorporating the Laboratory's institutional values of safety and security, teamwork, diversity, public service, and excellence in an institutional approach to carrying out Laboratory work. Browne said that he had selected the above individuals based on their individual strengths as well as their ability to work together as a team. "All of these people have committed themselves to our new approach and to living our values in how they carry out their responsibilities. I intend to hold them accountable to this commitment." Browne also announced several deputy associate director appointments. "It is important to recognize that this is a team effort and these deputies will be accountable for carrying out their responsibilities in the same manner as the entire senior executive team," said Browne. "All of these deputies are outstanding leaders in their own right and equally committed to our institutional success." The appointed deputies are: Weapons Engineering and Manufacturing (Mah) - Principal Deputy, Lou Salazar - Deputy for Pit Manufacturing, Vann Bynum Weapons Physics (Juzaitis) - Principal Deputy, Ed Heighway - Deputy for Pit Certification, Don McCoy - Deputy for ASCI, Don Shirk (acting) Operations (Holt) - Principal Deputy, Barbara Stine - Deputy for Readiness in Technology Base and Facilities (RTBF), Scott Gibbs Los Alamos National Laboratory is managed by the University of California for the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration.
