LOS ALAMOS, N.M., June 19, 2000 -- June is National Safety Month. To mark the occasion, the Los Alamos National Laboratory will present its annual Safety Days Community Event on June 22 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Metzger's True Value Hardware Store parking lot.

"The lab is very concerned about safety on and off the job," said Public Affairs Safety Coordinator Fran Talley. "National Safety Month is a great opportunity to partner with our neighbors to promote safety."

To reach as many people as possible, the fair has been planned at the same time as the Farmer's Market, which has a reputation for generating enthusiastic public interest. Local Los Alamos radio station KRSN will broadcast live in front of the Safety Days tent, interviewing the public and promoting safety throughout the day.

The Los Alamos Police Department will inspect car safety seats free of charge, according to Talley. Also, the Bike Subcommittee of the Los Alamos Transportation Board will inspect bicycles, helmets, and issue free safety flags that are designed to attract motorist's attention. In addition, the Espanola Wildlife Center will have a collection of animals that were impacted by the Cerro Grande Fire.

Among other groups attending are the Del Norte Chapter of the Red Cross, Los Alamos DWI Planning Council, Los Alamos Family Council, Los Alamos Public Schools Project Recovery Team, and representatives of the lab's ecology and fire safety groups.

Safety Days was started by former Laboratory Director Sig Hecker four years ago to raise awareness of the need to practice safety on the job. Since then, the program has been expanded to include the entire Los Alamos and Espanola communities, with hopes of involving Santa Fe next year.

"We continue in our institutional commitment to safety and are pleased to share this commitment with our community and friends," said ESH Division Director Denny Erickson. "One agency can't do it alone; we have to work together."

In addition to the community event, "The Benefits of Exercise" has been produced by the ESH-2/Wellness Center for laboratory workers. To reserve a copy of this half hour stress management video, send requests to flt@lanl.gov.

Employees who would like more information about Safety Days or the lab's Integrated Safety Management Plan, can go to the website at http://www.lanl.gov/orgs/ism, or contact Talley at 667-5225.
