LOS ALAMOS, N.M., April 21, 2000 -- The Site Planning and Development Group at the Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory has won the 2000 Federal Planning Division Award for Federal Planning Program Excellence.

The group, part of Los Alamos' Project Management Division, includes Ricardo Gonzales, Debra Griego, Kirt Anderson, Steven Bernia, Valerie Herrera, Daniel Pava, Don Sandstrom, Melanee Shurter, John Stanford, Joan Stockum, Rae Anne Tate and Mona Valencia.

The awards program, now in its seventh year, recognizes outstanding federal planning efforts for programs, projects, and plans, based on planning originality, transferability, quality, implementation and comprehensiveness. The group received the award last week at the Federal Planning Division's three-day conference in New York City.

The Federal Planning Division is part of the American Planning Association, a nonprofit public interest and research organization representing 30,000 practicing planners, officials and citizens involved with urban and rural planning issues.

The group was recognized for its efforts in producing Los Alamos' first comprehensive planning document in 10 years, entitled "Comprehensive Site Plan 2000." The plan outlines the physical facilities and infrastructure needed to revitalize the 57-year-old Laboratory and effectively meet its mission requirements and associated scientific disciplines over the next 10 years. The plan, which was delivered to local DOE offices Jan. 31, is available online at http://www.lanl.gov/csp2000/.

The Site Planning and Development staff, which has expertise in planning, architecture, engineering, mapping and other technical skills, currently is producing business case studies for many Los Alamos divisions. The business cases provide analyses of physical facilities and operating factors that help Los Alamos find ways to increase operating efficiencies and reduce costs Labwide.

The group also will be producing more detailed plans over the next several years for each of the 10 "neighborhoods," or planning areas, that comprise Los Alamos.
