LOS ALAMOS, N.M., March 16, 2000 -- Officials at the U.S. Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory on Saturday will close part of N.M. 501 while Laboratory security forces conduct a large-scale training exercise.

Security officers with Protection Technology Los Alamos and other personnel will conduct the exercise between 1 a.m. and 11 p.m. Saturday. The closure will affect N.M. 501 from Camp May Road to the "Back Gate" (the intersection of N.M. 4 and N.M. 501). Personnel from PTLA and the Laboratory will staff roadblocks during the closure.

Motorists must seek alternate routes during the closure period; those planning to travel toward Jemez Springs from the Los Alamos townsite should be prepared to go through White Rock. However, emergency vehicles will be allowed to go through the roadblock if necessary.

"We understand that this could inconvenience a number of people, and we apologize for any disruptions that will be caused by this closure," said Stan Busboom, director of the Laboratory's Security and Safeguards Division. "We hope people will understand that this closure is necessary to ensure the safety of the general public and of our employees and subcontractor personnel, and that training exercises are a necessary component of the Laboratory's national security commitment."
