Ramsey has been selected as deputy director of Los Alamos National Laboratory's Facilities and Waste Operations Division. She joins the U.S. Department of Energy laboratory this month. "Beverly will bring a wealth of management and leadership experience to FWO," said FWO Division director Tony Stanford. "She has extensive technical experience in the areas of nuclear engineering, transportation, design engineering and construction, and environmental engineering. And Beverly's credentials are extremely impressive, with 30 years experience in facilities management, decontamination and decommissioning of facilities and environmental remediation. She will be working closely with me on all technical and administrative aspects of the division. I am honored to announce her selection." Ramsey began her career as a research scientist in the Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1969. She later held a variety of nuclear and environmental technology positions with major industry, including Battelle Columbus Laboratories; Bechtel National, Inc.; and Kaiser Engineers, Inc. Prior to accepting the position with FWO, Ramsey was western operation manager and vice president for Advanced Technologies & Laboratories International, Inc. In addition, she has been serving the Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy Defense Programs as a mentor, especially in the areas of nuclear facilities authorization, environmental compliance, waste management and risk management. The author of numerous published peer-reviewed papers, Ramsey received her Bachelor's degree from Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn. She received her Master's and doctoral degrees in ecosystems analysis from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1971 and 1973, respectively. "I am pleased to be a part of the Laboratory," Ramsey said. "I believe the continued success of the Laboratory is greatly dependent upon our infrastructure, facilities management and waste management operations. Facility and Waste Operations Division is the services provider to our science and technology activities, and I am excited to work with Tony to continue its progress." FWO Division's scientists, engineers, technicians and administrative support personnel focus their efforts on eight core capabilities: facilities maintenance, nuclear facilities management, institutional facilities management, engineering support, utilities services, fire protection services, facility deconstruction and dismantlement activities, and waste management operations - including sanitary, hazardous and radioactive waste. In addition, FWO operates five facility management units for the Lab, providing services that range from roads, grounds and administrative buildings, to three nuclear waste treatment, storage and disposal facilities. The Laboratory comprises dozens of individual technical areas located on 43 square miles of land area; about 1,400 major buildings and other facilities are part of the Laboratory. Researchers at Los Alamos work on initiatives related to the Laboratory's central mission of enhancing global security as well as on basic research in a variety of disciplines.
