Laboratory, Valles Caldera sponsor environmental science event
July 9 - How would you like to study environmental science in a million-year-old outdoor “classroom?” The Summer Environmental Science Program lets students explore a wide range of science-related topics in the Valles Caldera National Preserve, a vast collapsed volcanic crater ringed by pine-shrouded mountains.


Barth Named Associate Director for Business Services
July 8 - Mark Barth is Los Alamos National Laboratory’s new associate director for Business Services. He begins July 13 and succeeds Doris Heim, who has taken a new Bechtel assignment in Frederick, Maryland.

June 25 - Los Alamos National Laboratory today provided the following statement about the Draft Final Report of the Los Alamos Historical Document Retrieval and Assessment (LAHDRA) Project.


Lab proposes cleanup of nine sites in Los Alamos
June 19 - Los Alamos National Laboratory officials at a public meeting Thursday proposed soil removal and other cleanup at nine sites on or near former Lab facilities.


William Rees Appointed to New Global Security Leadership Position at Los Alamos National Laboratory
June 16 - Los Alamos National Laboratory today announced that William S. Rees, Jr. will join the senior leadership team on June 29 as the principal associate director for Global Security, a new position that elevates the importance of the Laboratory’s work in key program areas, including non-proliferation, intelligence support, defense, nuclear counterterrorism, and homeland security.


Frontiers in Science Lectures Focus on Saving Energy Through Superconductivity
June 12 - Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist Dean Peterson discusses the science of high-temperature superconductivity in a series of Frontiers in Science lectures starting June 16 at the Duane W. Smith Auditorium at Los Alamos High School.

May 22 - A hazardous materials crew from Los Alamos National Laboratory worked Wednesday and Thursday to clean several small oil spills from Laboratory trash brought to the Los Alamos County Eco Station, a trash transfer and sorting facility.


Los Alamos National Laboratory again top contributor to United Way of Santa Fe County
May 14 - Employees of Los Alamos National Laboratory for the eighth consecutive year are the largest contributors to the United Way of Santa Fe County’s annual giving campaign.

Breaking the Ties that Bind: New Hope for Biomass Fuels
April 22 - Los Alamos National Laboratory researchers have discovered a potential chink in the armor of fibers that make the cell walls of certain inedible plant materials so tough. The insight ultimately could lead to a cost-effective and energy-efficient strategy for turning biomass into alternative fuels.


Albuquerque trio wins Supercomputing Challenge
April 21 - Erika DeBenedictis, Tony Huang, and Chris Hong from La Cueva High School in Albuquerque captured the top prize Tuesday in the 2009 New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge hosted by Los Alamos National Laboratory.

April 15 - Los Alamos National Laboratory employee teams and organizations earned eight 2009 Pollution Prevention awards from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). March 12 - Laboratory Chief Electrical Safety Officer Lloyd Gordon received the 2008 National Nuclear Security Administration Management & Operating Contractor Safety Professional of the Year award.


Los Alamos Researchers Create 'Map of Science'
March 11 - Los Alamos National Laboratory scientists have produced the world's first Map of Science—a high-resolution graphic depiction of the virtual trails scientists leave behind when they retrieve information from online services.


Search for Earth-like Planets includes LANL Star Analysis
March 6 - The Kepler space telescope is set to launch today from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at about 8:50 p.m. MST, and a group of scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory will be watching with keen interest.

February 26 - Two new Laboratory associate directors were announced this week. Mike Lansing was named associate director for Safeguards and Security and James “Chris” Cantwell is associate director for Environment, Safety, Health & Quality.


Los Alamos Identifies Internal Material Control Issue
February 26 - Officials at the Laboratory have reported an internal material control error to the National Nuclear Security Administration.


Research Highlights Potential for Improved Solar Cells
February 10 - A team of Los Alamos researchers led by Victor Klimov has shown that carrier multiplication—when a photon creates multiple electrons—is a real phenomenon in tiny semiconductor crystals and not a false observation born of extraneous effects that mimic carrier multiplication.


Los Alamos National Security Awards Grants to 24 Nonprofits in Northern New Mexico
February 5 - Local nonprofit organizations that benefit from volunteer efforts by employees of Los Alamos National Laboratory received an additional assist: $265,000 in special one-time Community Giving grants from Los Alamos National Security, LLC (LANS), the company that manages the Laboratory.


Lab scientists Burns, Hay named new AAAS Fellows
February 3 - Laboratory researchers Carol Burns and Jeffrey Hay are new 2008 Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The AAAS is the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of the journal Science.


 
JANUARY top

Los Alamos notifies employees, visitors of possible beryllium exposure
January 28 - The Laboratory is notifying approximately 1,890 current and former employees and authorized visitors of potential exposure to beryllium based on recently discovered beryllium contamination at one of the Lab's technical areas.


Lab Announces Selection of Venture Acceleration Fund Recipients
January 7 - Los Alamos National Laboratory has selected Retriever Technology, Elemetric Instruments, Star Cryoelectronics, and Veezyon as recipients of awards from the Los Alamos National Security, LLC Venture Acceleration Fund.
