Lab United Way campaign starts September 25

Laboratory employees and the public can buy their pirate map beginning today to participate in the Laboratory's 2007 United Way giving campaign.

The 2007 United Way giving campaign, "United in a New Way," begins Monday, September 25 with food booths, music, a book fair, pirate-look-alike contest, treasure map and long-sleeve T-shirt sales, and much more at Central Park Square in downtown Los Alamos.

The kick-off event, dubbed "Pirates of the Hill," is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to all Laboratory employees and the community. The Lab's campaign goal is $1 million, and the campaign runs through October 20. Los Alamos National Security, LLC, which operates the Laboratory, plans to match employee contributions up to $1 million.

Donations to the United Way are tax-deductible.

Pirate maps

The maps are $10 each and proceeds from the sale of the maps go to the United Way giving campaign. The maps contain the first clue to the treasure; additional clues will be available beginning September 26 in the Daily NewsBulletin and the Los Alamos Monitor, explained Debbi Wersonick of the Community Programs Office (CPO), which coordinates the campaign.

Daily clues will be published after 3 p.m., in the Daily NewsBulletin and Los Alamos Monitor the weeks of September 26-29 and October 3-6. Lab workers need to hit their "refresh/reload" button after 3 p.m. to obtain a new clue.

There are a total of ten clues. The first person to correctly answer all nine key words, the treasure chest clue, and the winning jewel on their map and return the map to the pirate ship after 3 p.m., on October 6 wins the grand prize: a trip to Las Vegas, Nevada, or Disneyland in California. The trip includes hotel and air fare costs and extras.

The clues are not in any Laboratory technical area.

All contestants who turn in their correct maps before the pirate ship sets sail at 9 p.m. are automatically entered into a raffle.

Purchase maps at CPO, 1619 Central Avenue downtown, the Payroll Office in the lower floor of the Otowi Building, United Way offices in Los Alamos and Santa Fe, and at the Los Alamos Monitor on DP Road. Only 2,000 maps are available. The maps are numbered and can't be photocopied. Employees must register their map at time of purchase to be eligible to participate.
