Get up and get walking! That is what the Wellness Center wants Lab employees to do as part of its 2006 Walking Month program beginning today.

Employees can register for Walking Month through Friday at http://int.lanl.gov/health/wellness online. Walking Month continues through October 13.

"Walking is the exercise most recommended by physicians and is a superb way to achieve cardiovascular fitness," said Sue Bachmeier, a health/fitness specialist in Occupational Medicine Operations (OM-OMO). "Convenient, inexpensive, and easy on your joints, walking may help reduce stress, burn calories, and speed up metabolism."

Walking Month is free to join and the first 250 people to register receive a pedometer; registrants above the initial 250 will receive a fitness towel or other gift.

After registering on the Lab Web site, employees register for "America on the Move," the national walking program, which allows them to track their progress and receive daily motivational tips. Weekly group walks also are scheduled with chances to win prizes, Bachmeier added.

For more information, contact Bachmeier at 7-6528 or write to smbachmeier@lanl.gov by electronic mail.
