Los Alamos NewsLetter to be distributed this weekMay 11, 2006
The biweekly hard-copy Los Alamos NewsLetter for the week of May 8 is scheduled to be in mailboxes and newsstands this week.
Laboratory technical staff members Keith Boyer and Senior Laboratory Fellow Stirling Colgate are recipients of the 2006 Los Alamos Medal. The Los Alamos Medal is the highest honor and most prestigious award the Laboratory can bestow upon an individual or small group. Read about this on Page 1. Page 2 contains information on the transition from Rich Marquez, associate director for administration (ADA), leader of the Lab's Transition team, and some bicycle safety tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. On Page 3, readers will find an article by Bill Wadt, Prime Contract Office (PCO) leader, on the Laboratory's Appendix F performance and some photos from the Bradbury Science Museum's Science Circus. During the summer, more than 1,200 students come to Los Alamos. This week's issue of the Los Alamos NewsLetter contains useful information for new and returning students, including welcome messages from Laboratory Director Bob Kuckuck and Kim Tait of the Lujan Center (LANSCE-LC), chair of the Students' Association; a calendar of events; important numbers and Web sites; and more. All this can be found on pages 4 and 5. Pages 6 and 7 contains a story on this year's Los Alamos Employees' Scholarhip Fund scholarship winners, the Los Alamos NewsLetter's feedback feature called "So … what do you think?" and more. And the spotlight on Page 8 features the Supercomputing Challenge. A pair of budding mathematicians from Albuquerque Manzano High School who wrote mathematical codes typical of those used in cryptography and mathematical error correction captured the top prize at this year's challenge. Employees can access the Los Alamos NewsLetter at http://www.lanl.gov/news/newsletter/lanl_archive.shtml online or obtain additional copies at the bright blue distribution boxes throughout the Lab. Organizations receiving too many or not enough should call the mailroom at 7-4166. If your organization's administrator is not putting the newsletter in your mailboxes, please encourage him or her to do so. Other Headlines
