Summer Lecture Series begins todayJune 9, 2008
The Laboratory’s summer lecture series begins today with a talk by Jim Smith of Materials Technology: Metallurgy (MST-6). The talk, entitled “Superconductivity, Magnetism, and Other Stories,” is the first in a series of lectures organized by the Los Alamos National Laboratory Institutes, Materials Physics and Applications (MPA) Division, and the Laboratory Students’ Association.
The talk is in the Materials Science Laboratory Auditorium and is open to badge holders only. Refreshments will be served. “I think they asked me to go first because they know I can tell ‘stories’ endlessly,” joked Smith, a physicist who said he is proud to have been born in 1943, the year in which the Laboratory was founded. Smith, who has been with the Lab since 1973 and has participated in colloquia with students nationwide, said his lecture will approach scientific topics in a conversational, low-intensity manner to make them readily accessible to an audience of undergraduate and graduate students. The lectures are specifically designed to present the innovative science done at the Lab to students, postdoctoral researchers, and staff. In the course of 18 talks and three site visits, participants will have a unique opportunity to tour facilities and learn about the Lab directly from top scientists.
