Los Alamos Authors rolls out today

April 23, 2008

New search tool improves search and retrieval

Los Alamos Authors, a new search service for Laboratory publications, debuts today at the Research Library (STBPO-RL).

The Los Alamos Authors search service offers an updated interface and new search capabilities for finding unclassified data that previously were stored in the former Classification (S-7) database. This data was created at the Laboratory and covers any Laboratory publications that were submitted for classification review. The earliest records are from 1943 and the repository includes data for records through this year.

“This release is an important step toward realizing the library’s vision of becoming information stewards for the Laboratory’s intellectual history in addition to data from outside sources,” said Research Library Director Miriam Blake.

The search tool is housed on the yellow network and is available to Laboratory employees only. Los Alamos Authors data is stored in an open-source, standards-based repository managed by the Research Library. Users will be able to search by fields including document type, meeting information, program codes, author, title, or across all words in the record.

Blake added, “I’m also pleased because we were able to use the same tools and model that were developed for OPPIE and apply it to a different dataset in a short period of time with minimal resources. This shows how extensible OPPIE is.”

Los Alamos Authors includes features such as

• Basic and fielded search
• Facets, which allow users to narrow results
• Full record display
• Help
• RIS and BibTeX format views.
