Finalist teams selected in Supercomputing Challenge

April 22, 2008

Awards expo ceremony this morning

Jessica Draper, right, talks about her team's project, "How To Stop Rumors" during the judging phase of the 18th annual Supercomputing Challenge Monday at the Laboratory. Her Melrose High School teammates are Meghan Kline, left, and Jeremy Sena, not shown.

Their project uses high-performance computers to model how rumors are spread based on location and type of individual personalities who engage in spreading rumors.

Finalist teams were selected during judging Monday, and winners will be announced this morning during the awards expo at Church of Christ Auditorium. See the Supercomputing Challenge Web page for more information.

Bottom photo: Marquita Romero of the Chief Information Office looks at one of the student projects on display Monday in the J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center. Romero volunteered to judge some of the projects. She participated in the Challenge as a student at EspaƱola Valley High School.

Standing are David Baack, left, and Nick Longenbaugh of Albuquerque Academy. Their research project, "Modeling an Ecosystem" allows computer users to create an ideal ecosystem, introduce different scenarios and problems, and then test how populations in the ecosystem respond.
