Just hanging out

July 27, 2007

This black bear was recently spotted on a tree behind a housing development in Ponderosa Estates on the north side of Los Alamos. This particular bear, estimated to weigh between 200 and 250 pounds, had previously been tagged by state game wardens and relocated to Chama. It made its way back to Los Alamos.

Laboratory employees who use the many jogging, hiking and cycling trails in the area should be aware of their surroundings, including looking up into trees for wildlife. A large quantity of plant and animal species can be found around the Laboratory and the surrounding area, and as such, encounters with wildlife are very common.

For more information on wildlife safety, see the July 17 Daily NewsBulletin.
