Anastasio addresses UC RegentsSeptember 19, 2008
Touts Laboratory's accomplishments Laboratory Director Michael Anastasio told regents of the University of California this week that Los Alamos's accomplishments in the two years under management by Los Alamos National Security, LLC have restored confidence in the Laboratory. Anastasio addressed the University of California Board of Regents on Wednesday in his role as president of LANS and as Laboratory director. Anastasio highlighted scientific and engineering achievements at the Lab, most notably the Roadrunner high-performance supercomputer and fundamental discoveries in other scientific disciplines. He said that operational improvements have reduced safety incidents, reduced the Lab's building "footprint," by a half-million square feet, while also allowing LANS and the Laboratory to make $3 million in investments in education, economic development, and charitable giving in local communities. A presentation from Anastasio's testimony is here. The regents meeting concluded Thursday. The University of California is part of Los Alamos National Security, LLC. The university operated the Laboratory from its Manhattan Project inception in 1943 through May 31, 2006. UC Executive Vice President Bruce Darling also addressed the regents, describing how Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore labs and other institutions can address challenges facing the nation.
