Los Alamos National Laboratory

Deadline today for Heller Postdoctoral Publication Prize nominations

March 25, 2008

The Laboratory is seeking nominations through today for the Leon Heller Postdoctoral Publication Prize, which recognizes the single best article in theoretical physics published or accepted for publication after January 1, 2006.

This biennial prize is sponsored and funded by former Laboratory scientist Leon Heller and administered by the Laboratory's Postdoctoral Program Office.

For the purpose of this award, "theoretical physics" is broadly interpreted to refer to any theoretical analysis of physical systems. The article should describe work performed primarily during the tenure of the postdoctoral appointment at the Laboratory. Former postdoctoral appointees also are eligible for the prize regardless of present position. In evaluating the articles, clarity of the writing will be considered along with the importance of the work.

Any Laboratory staff member, including the postdoc being nominated, can submit a letter of nomination. The nomination letter should highlight the significance and impact, both internal and external, of the work within the chosen field. If the article has co-authors, the letter must clearly address what portion of the work, including the writing of the article, was performed by the nominee while a postdoc at the Laboratory. No other supporting material will be accepted.

Submit a PDF file including the letter of nomination, not to exceed two pages in length, and a copy of the article to postdocprogram@lanl.gov. If the article has not yet been published, submit a copy of the statement of acceptance from the journal.

An awards ceremony is scheduled for later this year, at which time the winner will receive a certificate and $500 cash award and will be invited to present a colloquium on the work described in the winning publication.
