The Nuclear Age dawned over New Mexico 63 years ago today (Abq. Journal)

It was just about this time, on July 16, 1945, that the world's first nuclear device was tested on the Trinity Site, about 35 miles southeast of Socorro on what is now the White Sands Missile Range, ushering in a whole new age. At 5: 29: 45 a. m. local time, the device, nicknamed the "Gadget, " exploded atop a steel tower and lit up the surrounding mountains like a false sunrise and generated an unprecedented heat, prompting then-Los Alamos lab director J. GAO: LANL security lapses not fixed (LA Monitor)

The Government Accountability Office has returned to the subject of security at Los Alamos National Laboratory, this time calling for long-term strategies for improvement. In the first part of a lengthy report released this morning, GAO responded to a request by lawmakers to describe the security environment at LANL and determine whether new management approaches would sustain security improvements over the long term. The laboratory responded this morning with a statement that emphasized improvements identified in the report and actions taken to correct "legacy issues, " including a positive trend in reducing security incidents since 2005, consolidations and reductions in a variety classified media, assets and parts, and the creation of a "Super Vault Type Rooms, " for further limiting routine access to classified materials.
