Earlier this year DOE and NNSA released the draft preferred alternative for Complex Transformation, which includes a crucial role for Los Alamos.

I firmly believe that the preferred alternative provides a positive step for national security and sets a course for this laboratory that will ensure the preeminence of science and engineering for decades to come. Last week, we briefed a hundred community leaders from across the region on the importance of the work done at Los Alamos and asked for their support as the DOE and NNSA proceed through the NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) process.

Together with LASO Site Manager Don Winchell, we advised the audience of the opportunity the general public has to comment on the preferred alternative. A series of public meetings has been scheduled for New Mexico, including

• two in Los Alamos, March 12 (6 to 10 p.m.) and March 13 (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
• one in Santa Fe, March 13 (6 to 10 p.m.)
• one in Española, March 27 (6 to 10 p.m.)

This public participation process is important for the future of the Laboratory, and I encourage you to participate. Informed decision-making on such an important issue is essential, and I believe that your perspective as employees would be welcomed and valued by NNSA.
