Fees and Payments
The course fee involves a fixed subsistence fee equal to $1200 USD
per participant (student or instructor). This fee is all-inclusive
(covers room and board, room rentals, excursion, etc.). The same fee
applies to accompanying persons.
Following receipt of your acceptance letter, the subsistence fee should
be paid in advance by bank transfer. If you are offered a "Living
Stipend" in your invitation letter, subtract this amount from
the $1200 subsistence fee and the difference is what you should pay
via bank transfer. The deadline to pay the balance on your subsistence
fee via bank transfer is July 1, 2004. The bank account for this transfer
is:
Beneficiary Bank Address: Los Alamos National Bank, 1200 Trinity
Dr., Los Alamos, NM 87544 USA
Bank Routing No. (ABA N°.): 107001012
SWFT CODE: not applicable
Beneficiary Account number: 00-123013-01
Bank Holder of account: Kurt E. Sickafus DBA NATO-ASI
Transfer Amount: $1200 US Dollars/person
Reason for payment: <Name of participant>, NATO-ASI
course on Radiation Effects in Solids
Two important additional notes regarding fees:
1) participants should specify that payment is made for ISSSP-32.
2) participants should bring their bank transfer payment receipt
to Erice.
Alternative Plan I - Subsistence Fees and Bank Transfers
If you wish, you can wait until we meet in Erice to pay the balance
on your subsistence fee. You will then be required to pay your balance
on Day 1 of our Course. Note that if you choose to pay your balance
in Erice, PERSONAL CHECKS will NOT be accepted. You will be required
to pay using cash, traveler checks, or a money order.
Alternative Plan II - Subsistence Fees and Bank Transfers
If you wish, you can arrange a bank transfer directly into the account
belonging to the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture (hq@ccsem.infn.it
or phone +39-0923-869133). Contact Dr. Pino Aceto at Pino@ccsem.infn.it
(or phone +39-0923-869133) for details on how to use this method.
You must bring a receipt regarding this transaction to the Course
and present it at registration.
USA Participants Only: You have the option to pay
the balance on your subsistence fee by check. Make check payable to
"NATO-ASI" or "Kurt Sickafus
DBA NATO-ASI." Mail your check directly to:

Travel Stipend
If you received a Travel Stipend with your letter of invitation, your
Travel Stipend will be awarded to you in Erice. Therefore, you must
use your own finances to arrange your travel to and from Sicily. It
is not possible for you to be financially assisted with travel prior
to the Course. We apologize for this inconvenience.
Visas
Accepted participants should contact their nearest Italian consulate
to determine whether or not a visa is required to enter the country.
Board and Lodging
Full board and lodging in Erice is provided for the duration of the
School to each participant. This is covered by the subsistence
fee ($1200 USD) paid by each participant (less any living
stipend offered in the participant's invitation letter). Participants
should be aware that accommodation and facilities made available in
Erice are modest and that students are expected to share a room.
Food
You may choose among a good number of restaurants and if you are vegetarian,
you may request a vegetarian meal. Mediterranean cuisine easily allows
for a strict vegetarian (plant only) diet since the first course is
normally a fairly big pasta dish with all sorts of vegetable sauces
(excellent olive oil is currently used instead of butter in all of
south Italy). For less strict vegetarians who eat fish but not meat
there is no problem. Sicily is a paradise for fish and you can forget
meat for two weeks. Kosher food is also no problem, unless someone
wants strictly kosher food prepared under the supervision of a rabbi.
This is a real problem because there is no Jewish community in West
Sicily any longer (in fact, not since the time of the Spanish domination
in the sixteenth century).
Dress Code
The dress code for the Course allows for casual attire. As the streets
are cobbled, thick-soled crepe or rubber-soled shoes are recommended.
Accompanying Persons
Accompanying persons are welcome depending on the availability of
double rooms. Participants are earnestly requested to give early confirmation
together with the names of persons that will accompany them to Erice.
A full-day excursion to the neighboring archaeological sites and beaches
is offered to the participants and accompanying persons.
Transfer
Erice is a one-hour drive from Palermo airport. Transfers are provided
by the Ettore Majorana Centre. Upon arrival, look for the meeting-point
poster "Ettore Majorana Centre". Go to the tourist office
in the Arrivals area if you have any problems. In all cases, it is
essential that all travel plans be finalized and made known to Ms.
Rose Romero by Fax to 505.665.4584 and/or e-mail to rbromero@lanl.gov.
Weather
As Erice is situated on top of a mountain at an altitude of 750 meters,
it is much cooler than at sea level. Even in Summer, the weather is
rather unpredictable, temperature and weather conditions can suddenly
change. A sunny day can suddenly change to a cloudy day with fog (clouds
being “trapped” around the top of the mountain).
Excursions and Social Events
There is no extra charge for the social events or the excursion of
the School. A keg of free Marsala wine will be available in the Piano
Room (the small central room under the arches at the end of San Rocco
Court). This room also may be used for informal meetings after dinner.
All activities at the San Rocco Institute must stop before midnight.
On the Arrival Day (Saturday, July 17), there will be an informal
welcome party in the Piano Room after dinner. Sicilian sweets and
Marsala wine will be offered starting at 9:00 p.m.
For the excursion, the bus pick up/drop off point will be the large
parking area at Viale Pepoli (Porta Trapani).
There will be a banquet on Wednesday evening, July 28, with a concert
of Renaissance music in the cloister of San Francesco just before
the banquet.
Institutes and Lecture Halls
The "Ettore Majorana" Foundation and International Centre
for Scientific Culture (EMPCSC) is named after an outstanding Italian
physicist. Born in Sicily in 1906, Ettore Majorana's breadth of vision
and exceptional contributions to theoretical nuclear physics moved
Enrico Fermi to the following comment:
"There are many categories of scientists, people
of second and third rank, who do their best, but do not go very
far. There are also people of first-class rank, who make great discoveries,
fundamental to the development of science. But then there are the
geniuses, like Galilei and Newton. Well, Ettore Majorana was one
of them."
Embracing 110 Schools, covering all branches of Science, the Centre
is situated in the old pre-mediaeval city of Erice where three restored
monasteries (one of which was the residence of the Viceroy of Sicily
during the XIV and XV Centuries) provide an appropriate setting for
high intellectual endeavor. These ancient buildings are now named
after great scientists and strong supporters of the "Ettore Majorana"
Centre.
The San Francesco Monastery (former Viceroys residence) is now the
Eugene P. Wigner Institute with the "Enrico Fermi" Lecture
Hall.
The San Domenico Monastery is now the Patrick M. S. Blackett Institute
with the "Paul A. M. Dirac" Lecture Hall.
The San Rocco Monastery is now the Isidor I. Rabi Institute with the
"Richard P. Feynman" Lecture Hall, the Directorate and the
main Secretariat of the Centre.
There are living quarters in all three Institutes for people attending
the Courses of the Centre.
The Erice Station of the World Laboratory Seismological Network is
located in the I. I. Rabi Institute. The "Daniel Chalonge"
and the "Paul A. M. Dirac" Museums are situated at the Patrick
M. S. Blackett Institute.

An Important Recommendation
The EMFCSC's activities cover many fields and only a modern Alexandrian
Library could satisfy the participants in each given field. Such a
library would be our dream, but for the time being we do not have
it, and therefore participants should bring with them copies of journal
articles or pre-prints that they believe they will need during the
Course.
How to Reach Erice
By Air. Apart from international connections, there
are many flights from Rome to Palermo, and a few from Milan. Our bus
will be available at Palermo airport on the afternoon of your Arrival
Day (Saturday, July 17), until 5:00 p.m., to drive you to Erice.
By Train. Via Milan-Rome, you can reach Trapani directly.
From Trapani, to reach Erice comfortably, a taxi is suggested. Confirm
the price before taking the taxi.
By Road. There are two possibilities:
1) Drive along the Autostrada del Sole via Milan-Bologna-Florence-Rome-Naples-Villa
San Giovanni (Reggio Calabria); then take a ferry-boat from Villa
San Giovanni to Messina and drive to Erice (350 km from Messina).
2) Take the ferry-boat either from Genoa or Naples to Palermo, and
then drive on to Erice (100 km from Palermo). The places on the ferry-boat
must be booked in advance.
Arrival and Departure
Participants must communicate their arrival and departure times and
flight numbers well in advance of their arrival.
On the official Arrival Day (Saturday, July 17), transportation from
Palermo airport to Erice will be provided by the Ettore Majorana Centre.
Participants arriving at Palermo airport should look for the Ettore
Majorana meeting point inside the terminal at the arrival gate where
the Ettore Majorana Centre driver will be waiting.
Participants should register upon arrival at the Centre Secretariat
(I.I. Rabi Institute). There will be no lectures on either the Arrival
Day (Saturday, July 17) or the Departure Day (Thursday, July 29) of
the Course.
On the official Departure Day (Thursday, July 29), transport to Palermo
airport will be provided by the Centre.
