Drinking Water

General Information

The Los Alamos County and City of Santa Fe water supply systems serve the communities of Los Alamos, White Rock, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Santa Fe, respectively. The Laboratory's Special Drinking Water Sampling Program was established to provide quality assurance by monitoring and analyzing contaminants in the drinking water, maintaining records, and preparing reports. Similarly, the Laboratory participates in a cooperative program with San Ildefonso Pueblo to sample their drinking water.

The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) is the main federal law that ensures the quality of Americans' drinking water. Under the SDWA, the EPA sets standards for drinking water quality and oversees the states, localities, and water suppliers who implement those standards. Administration of this program is the responsibility of the following municipalities.
