TA-21 Closure Project

TA-21, also known as the Delta Prime (DP) Site, is on DP Mesa, situated immediately east-southeast of the Los Alamos town site at an elevation of 7140 feet.

TA-21 was the site of chemical research for refining plutonium and plutonium metal production from 1945 to 1978. As a result, most waste disposal activities involved plutonium.

MDAs located at TA-21 include MDAs A, B, T, U and V. These MDAs are listed as solid waste management units (SWMUs) in LANL’s Hazardous Waste Facility Permit.

TA-21 Decontamination & Decommissioning

Delta Prime West

The Reconnaissance Level Characterization from the TA-21 D&D investigative effort of Delta Prime (DP) West has been completed.

Delta Prime East & the Central Corridor

The Reconnaissance Level Characterization for the TA-21 D&D investigative effort of DP East and the central corridor buildings will provide an initial assessment of the contamination, hazards, and other conditions associated with the subject facilities. Such an assessment will enable project personnel to perform the following tasks:

  • Identify decommissioning approaches and technologies
  • Develop worker H&S controls
  • Estimate waste volumes by waste types
  • Prepare sound decision documents for regulatory agency review and approval
  • Support the design of in-process and pre-demolition characterization

The D&D Project Leaders are currently engaged in the procurement processes for the following areas:

  • D&D of DP West
  • Abatement of building 210 at TA-21
  • Characterization of DP East and the central corridor buildings
