Feature Story
National Engineers WeekYou and your children may enjoy participating in a national outreach program called Discover"E" ("E" for engineering) during National Engineers Week, February 20-26, 2005.
Our aspiration is that by demonstrating the importance and excitement of engineering we will be able to raise the status of those already working in the profession. We also want to attract the attention of the next generation–the young men and women whose work as engineers will shape life in this country and internationally throughout the twenty first century. Engineers have turned ideas into reality in ways that have improved every aspect of human life. Our homes and cars, our hospitals and communication systems are all products of the skill of engineering–the magical ability to transform concepts and possibilities into practical, working goods and services. Behind every step forward in human life stands an engineer. Engineers Week, a formal coalition of more than 70 engineering, education, and cultural societies, and more than 50 corporations and government agencies, was founded in the United States in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers. Dedicated to raising public awareness of engineer’s positive contributions to quality of life, Engineers Week promotes recognition among parents, teachers and students of the importance of a technical education and a high level of math, science, and technology literacy, and motivates youth to pursue engineering careers in order to provide a diverse and vigorous engineering workforce. Each year Engineers Week reaches thousands of schools, businesses, and community groups across the United States. More than three million engineers, teachers, and students will participate nationwide in National Engineers Week activities. Engineers will sponsor extracurricular activities to show students how math, science, and engineering create the world around them and to introduce them to technical careers. The National Science Educational Leadership Association and School Science & Mathematics Association have endorsed Discover“E”. Top of page |
