Preparing the Lab for workforce needs
Our Laboratory employs more than 10,000 people—one fifth of who are eligible to embark on a well-deserved retirement in the next four years (congratulations, baby boomers, you made it!). But what’s a Laboratory to do when its workforce of 30-some years trades chemistry for crosswords?
Hire new people, of course, which is exactly what Laboratory Director Charlie McMillan told community leaders at a recent meeting. “You’re looking at something in excess of 2,000 people we expect to hire at the Laboratory by 2020,” he says. “That’s a lot of opportunity.”
Those new hires will include 600–700 world-class scientists in the research and development division, 400 support techs, and 1,400 people in the business services and operations sectors. Postdocs and students are also a critical part of this equation, as a majority of them will likely return to work at the Lab full time.
It is our hope that many of these new hires will come from right here in Northern New Mexico. The Community Partnerships Office will be working with the Laboratory's human resources office, regional colleges, and community partners to share information as we prepare for our shared future.
Please call our office at (505) 665-4400 if you are looking for information about hiring projections. To learn more about existing opportunities and to apply for specific openings, visit the Laboratory's job posting website at lanl.gov/careers.
