Welcoming the Laboratory’s summer students
Summer in New Mexico brings warm days, vacations, and festivals! For the Lab staff, summer also brings the great pleasure of a new group of student partners.
Some of the students will be returning, some of them are new to the Lab. But all of them are truly welcome because of the fresh eyes and insights they bring, allowing Lab staff to sharpen their skills and hopefully pass on some of their expertise and passion for our national security science, technology and engineering.
Los Alamos is responsible for very complex missions supporting U.S. national security. Meeting these missions inevitably involves very unique experimental, computational, engineering and technology tools. Our staff employs deliberate interdisciplinary approaches to solving these diverse problems—often also resulting in breakthroughs at the frontiers of disciplines from biology to cosmology. And none of this is possible without dedicated professional support for business and operational functions.
This rich ecosystem for science, technology and engineering in pursuit of our mission makes for an ever-changing but always exciting environment.
I hope each student has the opportunity to experience the institution’s excitement and diversity in their particular summer projects. The Students’ Association and the Student Program Office are here to help.
While students are with us they have the chance to form many friendships, some of which will turn out to be a professional support system throughout their careers.
