Shadi Dayeh is currently an assistant professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering with the Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). During his four years as a postdoc at the Lab (from 2008 to 20 that began in 2008, he was with the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) that is part of the Materials Physics and Applications division. While here he helped advance the understanding and creation of heterostructured nanowires and their application to such areas as neural recording. The Lab recognized his accomplishments by appointing him a J. Robert Oppenheimer Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow as well as with a Postdoctoral Distinguished Performance award. Both awards recognize outstanding research related to the Lab’s missions and significant scientific contributions.
Since moving to UCSD, additional recognition has come from the National Science Foundation’s Early Career Development (CAREER) Program, which he received earlier this year. Its intent is to support “junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.” “It was the technical leadership I acquired at the Lab that helped me receive this latest honor,” said Dayeh.
He was also very complimentary of the support he received while a postdoc at the Lab. “I can’t say enough about the exceptional intellectual and professional mentorship I received from my postdoctoral advisor in CINT, Tom Picraux, and the phenomenal leadership and devotion of Mary Anne With to postdoctoral matters and growth, where she runs the Lab’s postdoc program out of the National Security Education Center.” He also particularly pointed to his first two years at the Lab as helping build a strong foundation for his professional career.
