Katherine Lovejoy

Katherine Lovejoy is currently a chemist with the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products and is part of a new center that is setting new tobacco product standards and reviewing new product applications, eventually including those for e-cigarettes.

Lovejoy joined the Lab in 2009 as an Intelligence Community Postdoctoral Fellow and in her four years as researched within a variety of areas including neutron detection, algae processing, transdermal drug delivery and materials to defeat antibiotic-resistant microbes. Her experience also included advanced analysis of dyes on wool fibers found at improvised explosive device explosion sites.

While at the Lab, she became the 2011 Frederick Reines (FR) Fellow in Experimental Sciences that recognizes individuals whose work demonstrated outstanding research ability. It is named after a former Lab researcher who won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1995.

Even though her Lab mentors, Rico Del Sesto and Andy Koppisch, are no longer employed in Los Alamos, she still stays in touch with them and finds them a valuable source of information and connections. She also praised the support she received from Mary Anne With, who runs the Lab’s postdoc program out of the National Security Education Center.

When asked about how her connection to the Lab has stayed with her since her departure last year, she indicated how supported she felt last June when, as she was introduced to a group of 150 new coworkers at the FDA, at the mention of Los Alamos, “two guys started clapping.”
