LOS ALAMOS, New Mexico, September 21, 2010—Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Bradbury Science Museum is participating for the sixth year in the Smithsonian’s Museum Day on Saturday, September 25. Sponsored by Smithsonian Media, Museum Day is a day when participating museums and cultural institutions across the nation open their doors free of charge to anyone presenting a Smithsonian Museum Day ticket.

“The Bradbury Science Museum already has a free-admission policy, but we’re participating to help raise awareness of the vital role museums play in celebrating culture, learning, and the dissemination of knowledge. We’re excited to again have the Bradbury represent local New Mexico museums in this nationwide event,” said Bradbury Science Museum Director Linda Deck.

Last year, more than 300,000 museum-goers and 1,300 venues participated in Museum Day. Attendees will need to download Smithsonian magazine’s Museum Day admission card at http://microsite.smithsonianmag.com/museumday/ to gain free entry to participating institutions. Each card provides museum access for two people, and only one admission card per household is permitted. A ticket will gain entry in only one museum and only in participating museums. The Web site also provides listings and links to other participating museums nationwide.

Deck said that although the Bradbury Science Museum doesn’t charge admission, museum patrons and visitors are encouraged to bring the Smithsonian Museum Card to the Bradbury Science Museum. These are returned to Museum Day organizers, who track attendance tied to the event.

The Bradbury Science Museum features films and interactive exhibits interpreting LANL’s contributions to modern science, research, and technology, including its role in the Manhattan Project and current mission in national security.

The Bradbury is open daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Photos are allowed. The museum is located at 15th Street and Central Avenue in downtown Los Alamos. For more information, contact Mary Ellen Ortiz at (505) 664-0244 or go to the museum’s Web site.
