College plans Sustainable Technology Center
Los Alamos, New Mexico, July 16, 2009—Representatives from Los Alamos
National Security, LLC and Los Alamos National Laboratory today are
presenting a check for $100,000 to the Santa Fe Community College and
its GROW Foundation for the college’s planned Sustainable Technologies
The new center is an educational and training facility for alternative energy and green jobs that will integrate 21st century trades with advanced technologies and “green” curricula to promote a sustained economy.
LANS, which manages and operates Los Alamos National Laboratory for the National Nuclear Security Administration, signed the institutional agreement with the college and the GROW Foundation to help further develop and expand the renewable energy industry cluster in the Santa Fe region. The funds will be used by the Sustainable Technologies Center to help cover faculty salaries and fund program development.
The Sustainable Technologies Center is part of the Trades and Advanced Technology Technologies Center, a 36,000-square-foot structure scheduled for completion by fall 2010. Groundbreaking on the entire facility is scheduled for August 14.
“Los Alamos National Security is eager to help more New Mexicans obtain training and find careers in advanced technologies professions,” said LANS Executive Staff Director Jerry Ethridge.
“We see SFCC as a leader in providing programs that have a positive impact on New Mexico’s economy and its workforce, and we are proud to support the growth of its Sustainable Technologies Center.”
According to Kurt Steinhaus of the Laboratory’s Community Programs Office, the agreement between LANS, GROW, and SFCC also will help the Laboratory meet future workforce needs by providing a college environment that encourages students to pursue careers, possibly at the Laboratory, in advanced technology fields.
The GROW Foundation provides Santa Fe Community College financial support and assistance for new program development and support, endowed faculty chairs, capital campaigns, and student scholarships
Los Alamos National Laboratory, a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security, is operated by Los Alamos National Security, LLC, a team composed of Bechtel National, the University of California, The Babcock & Wilcox Company, and URS for the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration.
Los Alamos enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
