Los Alamos, New Mexico, December 15, 2009— Eleven local nonprofit organizations with projects supported by Los Alamos National Laboratory employee volunteers received $75,000 in Community Giving grants from Los Alamos National Security, LLC, the company that manages the Lab for the National Nuclear Security Administration.
The organizations are located in Los Alamos, Española, Taos, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque and received grants for projects that range from a summer camp for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders to providing winter coats and shoes for needy children.
“This is yet another way Los Alamos National Security is investing in our regional community. By supporting their organizations, we’re helping to improve the communities in which our employees and their families live,” said Jerry Ethridge, executive staff director of Los Alamos National Security, LLC.
The Community Giving grants program is one of several regional initiatives supported by the LANS Community Commitment Plan, which invests approximately $3 million per year in economic development, education, and other community giving efforts. The grants were specifically awarded to enhance the efforts of Lab employees working with nonprofit organizations to improve the quality of life in Northern New Mexico. Qualifying 501(c) (3) organizations in New Mexico were awarded dollar amounts ranging from $1,000 to $12,000 through this program.
The grant awards are in addition to the LANS, LLC $1 million match of employee contributions through the Laboratory's employee giving campaign that this year provided more than $2 million to the United Way of Northern New Mexico, United Way of Santa Fe County, and other eligible nonprofit organizations, as well as Laboratory Volunteer Recognition Awards of $80,400.
