Eighth International Workshop on Spallation Materials

October 16 -20, 2006, Taos, NM, USA

IWSMT-8 is the latest in the series of workshops that started with the first meeting held in 1996 in Oak Ridge, USA. The International Workshop on Spallation Materials Technology (IWSMT) has become an excellent forum for demonstrating the progress and achievements in new and existing spallation neutron sources and ADS projects, presenting latest results from materials related studies in different fields, radiation damage effects and liquid metal compatibility etc., and discussing open questions encountered in developing high-power spallation targets.

There have been seven meetings in the series over the last eight years with joint efforts of Oak Ridge National Laboratory ( ORNL , USA ), Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ, Germany ), Los Alamos National Laboratory ( LANL , USA ), Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI, Switzerland ) the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA, Japan ) and the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK, Japan). In each meeting, about sixty scientists and engineers from different countries worldwide contributed around fifty presentations. The proceedings of the first three meetings were published by the host institutes ORNL, FZJ and LANL, respectively. The proceedings of the fourth and fifth meetings were edited by the host institutes PSI and ORNL and published in volumes 296 and 318 of Journal of Nuclear Materials (JNM). IWSMT-6 was held with cooperative sponsorships of KEK and JAERI (now JAEA). The proceedings were edited by jointly by JAERI (now JAEA) and KEK and appeared in JNM. The proceedings from IWSMT-7 have been edited by PSI and will appear shortly.

IWSMT-8 has the same mission as the previous meetings, namely to provide a forum for demonstrating the progress in different spallation target R&D projects and exchanging the latest information of materials related studies. LANL is pleased and honored to host this meeting and warmly welcomes you to join it.

Topics for IWSMT-8

  • Design and engineering of new Spallation Sources and Test Stations
  • Materials relevant experience in operating Spallation Neutron Sources
  • Cavitation erosion (pitting) and pressure waves in liquid metal targets
  • Radiation effects in target structural materials and in accelerator elements
  • Compatibility of materials with their environments
  • Particle transport and target/moderator engineering in the field of high intensity spallation neutron sources
  • Corrosion effects under radiation in nuclear transmutation materials
  • Modeling of radiation and corrosion effects in structural materials and in spallation targets

The workshop will cover the interfaces between materials behavior and closely related areas such as particle transport and fluid dynamics. Contributions focusing on materials performance R&D including actual experience in existing spallation sources will be especially welcome.
