Title: The Southern Sky Survey - A Survey for Extremely Metal-poor Stars

Author(s): Stefan C. Keller

Abstract: The Southern Sky Survey will be a multi-colour, multi-epoch survey of the 2$\\pi$ steradian south of the celestial equator to $g_{AB} \\sim 23$ magnitude. It will commense regular operation in early 2008. The filter set for the survey is optimised for stellar astrophysics. The survey will provide unprecedented resolution of effective temperature, surface gravity and metallicity for on order of 100 million galactic stars. I will demonstrate how our photometric system can sift the extremely metal-poor star population from the bulk of the halo leading to $\\sim 60 \\times$ increase in the number of [Fe/H]$<$-5 stars.
