My research interests involve the preparation and characterization of self-assembled materials, including organic/inorganic composite materials, self-assembled monolayers and lipid membrane architectures. Current projects include the preparation, functionalization and characterization of luminescent silica nanoparticles for tracking and sensing, ionic liquid embedded silica gels for sensing applications, and assembly of lipid membrane architectures on nanoporous substrates for incorporation of active membrane proteins. We use a variety of techniques, including fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and ellipsometry, to characterize the assemblies and synthesized materials prepared in our lab.
