  • A new explosive: Melt-castable nitrate ester with high explosive energy
    10 Oct 2008
    • Since the discovery of nitroglycerin in 1846, the nitrate ester group of compounds has been known for its explosive properties. A whole series of other nitrate esters have been subsequently put to use as explosives and fuels. A research team led by David E. Chavez at Los Alamos National Laboratory has now developed a novel tetranitrate ester.
  • Nuclear weapons complex changes advance
    9 Oct 2008
    • WASHINGTON (AP) - The Energy Department moved ahead Thursday on further restricting the nation's most dangerous nuclear material, part of a plan to scale back and modernize management of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile. . . . The plan would concentrate manufacture of plutonium triggers and other plutonium research at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
  • Port security system awarded anti-terrorism technology designation by DHS
    9 Oct 2008
    • A system developed by Cargotec Port Security, LLC has been awarded Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology Designation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. . . . Cargotec Port Security uses the Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport Code software package developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory . The Cargotec Port Security radiation isotope database . . . is based on the Los Alamos Monte-Carlo nuclear simulation tool.
  • Lockheed Martin sensor to be aboard IBEX space mission
    8 Oct 2008
    • NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission -- the first designed to globally image the extreme edge of our solar system -- is ready for launch on a Pegasus rocket from Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, on October 19. . . . A team at Los Alamos National Laboratory and SwRI built the IBEX-Hi sensor.
  • Lab grants license for muon tomography technology
    7 Oct 2008
    • Los Alamos National Laboratory has granted Decision Sciences Corporation an exclusive worldwide license to commercialize muon tomography, a Lab-developed technology to detect and identify concealed nuclear threat materials.
  • DOE awards $43M for enhanced geothermal systems
    7 Oct 2008
    • The U.S. Department of Energy yesterday announced funding awards for research, development and demonstration of enhanced geothermal systems [including]: MIT, Chevron and DOE's Los Alamos National Laboratory, to combine detailed high-resolution analysis of microseismicity accompanying the stimulation of an EGS reservoir with a state-of-the-art geomechanical model of the reservoir to investigate the relationship between the seismicity and flow characteristics.
  • In quantum channels, zero plus zero can equal non-zero
    6 Oct 2008
    • Physicists have discovered a strange characteristic of quantum communication channels. If two quantum channels each have a transmission capacity of zero, they may still have a nonzero capacity when used together. This effect, which has no classical counterpart, reveals a new complexity in the fundamental nature of quantum communication.
  • HIV dates to around 1900, study shows
    3 Oct 2008
    • A genetic analysis of a biopsy sample recently discovered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has led researchers to conclude that the virus that causes AIDS has existed in human populations for more than a century, according to a study released Wednesday. . . .
  • Web page highlights education resources
    3 Oct 2008
    • A new Web site provides information about the Laboratory's kindergarten through college education programs and partnerships in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.
  • Exotic materials could combat quantum-mechanical stickiness
    2 Oct 2008
    • Researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory, in New Mexico, think they may have the answer to a vexing problem called stiction, which causes ultrasmall components of microelectromechanical systems to stick together. This impediment to micromovement is caused by the Casimir effect, an odd attractive force that influences only objects that are very close together.

CMRR project reviewing business sources

CMRR ProjectThe Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement Facility (CMRR) Project has launched a website for informational and planning purposes, as a market research tool to determine the availability and adequacy of potential business sources before issuing a Request for Proposal (RFP). This is not a request for proposals or solicitation.

The project is seeking enclosure fabricators that can meet the Quality Assurance requirements of DOE Order 414.1C, Quality Assurance and 10CFR830, Subpart A, Nuclear Safety: Quality Assurance Requirements, using NQA-1-2000, Quality Assurance Requirements for Nuclear Facility Applications as the basis of its Quality Assurance Program.
